Attention Windows Users
I found out through zeldman.com that there’s a huge hole in Windows that could allow hackers to severely mess with you. Dad just the other day told me he was worried (I don’t know how seriously) that his computer was slow because somebody was messing with him. Anyway, read the Zeldman commentary to be enlightened on the ironies, then read the USA Today atricle. Then download the security patch (see the “Bulletins” column). Then buy a Mac.

Dad • 07/18/03 • 6:21 PM:I have Windows ‘98, which they don’t seem to have a patch for. Maybe it’s hopeless. Maybe I should learn Linux or something. I’m almost sold on the MAC (or at least not-PC, not-MS). Except, what if everybody switches to MAC and they get fat and happy like Microsoft?
Patrick • 07/19/03 • 9:16 AM:I’ve read that Macs have only 5% of the personal computer market currently. So even if they did get too popular and fat and happy, it would take a while. Certainly your computer would be obsolete by then. By the way, the eMac (originally configured only for education) is the most economical Mac. The low-end model is basically the same guts as my iMac (800 MHz G4 processor, 40Gb hard drive, 128 Mb RAM), but with only a CD-ROM drive and a CRT monitor (instead of elegant, swiveling LCD). You can buy a swivel stand for it so you can have some maneuverability too. For $1000 you can get a faster processor, a combo drive (watch DVDs, burn CDs), and more hard disk space. Any of your children can get these at an educator’s discount and knock $50 off the price.
