Happy Birthday, Karina

Twenty-six years ago today, Lourdes Karina Cabrera Arias was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. I was in Morristown, New Jersey, enjoying a hot day, playing in the back yard under an azalea bush that formed a sort of cave, which I imagined was from the Land of the Lost. Or I was inside wishing the rain would stop, reading a story with Mom and Kathleen while David took a nap. Or I waited until Dad got home from work (it was a Thursday), then asked him to play a game of catch. Or maybe we were all in Maine, lazing around the cabin, running to the lake, looking for frogs. I could research it, look up things like the weather in old newspapers, find out when we took our vacation that year. That would be interesting, but not as interesting as the strange twists and crossings that would bring me to Karina seventeen years later, and bring Karina to me two years after that, and bring Patrick IV and Adriana to us all in the ensuing years, and bring Sara or Marcos next February 29th or thereabouts.
I love this woman. Happy Birthday, Karina.

Mom • 08/04/03 • 8:53 PM:Wow - what absolutely fantastic news!! And you’ll be in Ohio when Sara or Marcos is born - close to us again. I am so happy for the four of you. Now, Karina, please take it easy, eat - and drink milk.
We are trying to call you now at your mother’s as there was no answer at your house.
I hope you are having a wonderful birthday. - three kids - super!! Guess we’ll have to get the baby clothes and bassinet out - and eventually the crib - oh, this is so great!! Hope we can get the call to go thru - we’ve been trying and having a hard time

Dad • 08/08/03 • 8:34 PM:A beautiful tribute, Patrick, well deserved by your lovely and lovable wife, Karina. We are, of course, thrilled by the great news. Please take care of our new grandchild and his mother as we wait impatiently for his or her delivery.
Mom • 08/11/03 • 8:55 PM:just read dad’s comment - and i want everyone to know that i feel sure that it will be a girl. one night i was, as usual, standing on the deck having a cigarette, and it just came to me that this was going to be a beautiful, perfect girl. Now, if you all remember, i was right with all my own children and right with karina’s first two. so let’s see how this old grandmother’s record continues. now i should get mrs. hirshkind to teach me how to crochet. on a bus trip to connecticut, she was crochetting a beautiful blanket and it looked so easy that i figure i can do it. all i have to do is ask her.

mom, geez. we’ve played crochet on several occasions in the backyard. i don’t understand why you would get some “professional” to teach you when clearly you could have played with your own family. we’re not great at it, but we get by. by the way, how do you play with a blanket?
relating to mom’s psycho-powers, i hope she i right in saying that i’m going to get a job quickly. mom, is it a really GOOD job with a lot of money? wait, it’s not about the money.
Dad • 08/12/03 • 9:15 PM:Dan,
You’re confusing crocheting with lawn darts.
