99 behind (and gaining?)

Basically I wanted to get to less than 100 entries behind Pat. Now I’ve done it! I also wanted people to ponder my recent Bingo Winning Streak. On Tuesday I helped out with the freshmen retreat here at Ignatius. In the morning my crew went to an old-folks/assisted living place. We played Bingo for about 2 hours 45 minutes. Absolutely grueling. Over that time we played 9 different games (some obviously taking a while - like ‘total black out’). I won 4 times. Yee haw. I can’t remember ever winning Bingo, and then all at once my luck changed. What are the chances (when playing with 18 or so people) of winning Bingo 4 or 9 times? I am the Bingo Superstar!

Assuming each game is totally random and each person has the same chance of winning, the odds of you winning 4 out of 9 games is about 1 in 1100. You can calculate this (and lots of other neat probability stuffs) in EXCEL using the BINOMDIST function. In the bingo case, the number of trials is 9, the number of successes (Dave wins) is 4, the probability of a single win is 1/18, and the “Cumulative logical value” should be set to 0.

By the way, the odds of winning 4 in a row is 1 in 18^4, which is 1 : 104976.

Of course, the probability of each person winning is not the same, as it requires some skill to keep track of the numbers and not miss any squares. (I’m ignoring multiple cards, which obviously multiplies the chance of winning while also increasing the opportunity to miss some numbers.) Anyway, maybe the other people weren’t paying good attention.
