Voiceover Guys

This was a good find. Richard Schoen is a voiceover guy whose voice you will recognize.

I listened to a lot of the stuff on his site and, after a couple minutes, it gets to be pretty hilarious. I start imagining the guy sitting there in a soundbooth with a microphone, reading his lines, getting into his role, “Pork. The other white meat.” Unintentional comedy happens, guys.

Ron Harper, though no longer in professional basketball, still has a great voice (if you’ve ever heard the actual NBA Ron Harper speak, you know how funny my joke is). Though I’ve heard this guy’s voice before, I think I’ve only heard it in crappy “news at 11” ads.

No one puts his chin to his chest in order to achieve the ultimate low-voice quite like Mitch Phillips. This is the ultimate example of picturing the guy in the sound booth. I laugh just thinking about it. And these sound clips spliced together can make you laugh too—an ad for Denzel Washington’s Training Day, “The only thing more dangerous than the line being crossed…is the cop who crosses it!” spliced next to “Meet a real life Prince Charming!” There’s not even a pause between the voices! Comedy!

NPR (probably All Things Considered) had a piece on one of these guys. Dad and I heard it last Friday, but I think it was an old one. I can’t now find it on their web site, but that’s typical for me. I can never find anything on there. If anyone has more luck and I did, please let us all know.

By the way, Dan, assign a category to your post.

Hi Patrick. No I’m not the basketball player. And since you’re in Athens and I’m in Cincy, you probably HAVE heard me. But sadly, I don’t do any crappy news at 11 ads in Ohio. Thanks for the link, though!

Hey, wait! That was Dan’s joke! I’m innocent! Thanks for taking it well anyway, Ron. We dig the Beatles Breaks at your site.

Thanks, I think. Here’s to unintentional comedy. Anything that increases the laughter is fine by me.

Actually, I didn’t know that my site was funny. See, I take my work very seriously. Yeah, right. You try saying, “…it’s on your mind, it’s in your mouth, it’s pork…” with a straight face.

That “Pork” session was recorded a while ago, but I remember it well. The agency team came in with this wonderful symphonic music and said, “Can you make it fit?” That was a nice challenge and great fun.

Thanks for the link. And here’s to you!

Best,

Richard Schoen

I think what I was getting at is the tendency I have to think about how the process of things go. It’s similar to saying a word out loud in that if you say it long enough, it starts to sound really funny. That’s all. I was listening to the voiceover work and I just kept getting pictures in my head. Trust me, I’m not making fun of anyone. I am, however, guilty of saying these things in jest to my family without regarding the power of google…

Wanna see the face of the most famous voiceover guy? Wanna see him making fun of movie-trailer writing? Jerry Seinfeld’s movie about comedy—The Trailer! (need quicktime)

Patrick • 06/28/04 1:41 AM:

Wanna actually put a link in there so we actually can see the face of this guy?

Dad • 06/28/04 11:01 AM:

You have to play the trailer. It’s funny.

Patrick • 06/29/04 11:47 AM:

Dad, I know. But earlier, Dan hadn’t put any link in there. Now he has. Everything’s fine. I saw it. It’s funny. The guy looks smaller than he should be.

Finally, my dreams have been answered. Some goofballs have put together a short movie of the most famous voiceover guys in the country. Seriously, I didn’t know it before I saw it, but I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.

I love how they roll their eyes at the Disney guy. Hilarious!

Patrick • 09/02/05 4:23 PM:

See? When Dan says “My dreams have been answered,” we understand that this is a brilliant conflation. When GWB says “Families is a place where wings can take dream,” we know he’s an idiot.

Also, the video is funny, though a bit grainy. I sent it to Glen Phillips, and he liked it, he said.
