Miracle
You want the chills? Read this.
My question is this - why does the very mention of The Miracle give me the chills and make my eyes water? What is it about sports, and specifically the USA beating the Soviets, that can move people (me) the way it does? I don’t know, but I love it. Magnificent.

David • 02/05/04 • 4:53 PM:In close second for “most moving and powerful moment in sports” is Jimmy Valvano’s speech at the ESPY’s - “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up” (gives me the chills just writing it).
Let’s start a list of others:
Maybe Christian Laettner’s last second shot to beat Kentucky (he was perfect for the day shooting).
The guy from Great Britain pulling his hamstring during the Olympics and having his Dad come out of the stands to help him hop/hobble to complete the 400. (come to think of it, that’s right up there with Jimmy V.)
Michael Jordan’s shot to be the Caveliers
More…
David • 02/05/04 • 4:58 PM:I almost forgot - Kerri Strug landing the vault in ‘98. Booyah. Not to be outdone by her brother, Kippy, on SNL.
Dad • 02/05/04 • 9:51 PM:Guess who this is, David:
1993 world record-holder in 500m; fell in 500m and 1,000m in 1988 Olympics at Calgary after learning of death of sister Jane; placed 4th in 500m and didn’t attempt 1,000m 4 years later in Albertville; fell in 500m at ‘94 Games in Lillehammer, but finally won an Olympic medal with world record (1:12.43) effort in 1,000m, then took victory lap with baby daughter Jane in his arms; won 1994 Sullivan Award.
David • 02/05/04 • 10:21 PM:Ok, ok. You win. I am ashamed for not remembering that one. Although less famous (because it was an individual sport?), it certainly is as powerful as the Miracle on Ice (hockey-style). I’m surprised you remember the distances and time so well Dad. Nice work. Why do the memories slanted towards the Olympics?
Dan • 02/07/04 • 12:26 AM:Which one doesn’t fit? (hint: Michael Jordan)
