Flying Cowboys

Now that the volleyball season is nearing its end, I have decided to ‘diversify’ (read: complicate) our offense a little. We’re still having trouble running 4s, 1s, and 5s - so I figured, “Let’s complicate things and run some more plays.” Of course they wanted to learn to hit slides from the middle first. For some reason (I normally can’t remember why I tell such stories) I told the kids all about the Texas Takeoff and how as a kid I confused it and called it The Flying Cowboy. The kids loved it, and now we simply call it The Cowboy. Our middles still can’t hit quicks, but they love Cowboys. So here’s to messing up names and creating better ones. Yee-haw!!

The thing about slides is that it’s more of a basketball motion than a volleyball motion. And since your players (seem to) have much more basketball experience, I wonder if they find this easier than hitting a regular 1 ball or back 1. So, how is it going? I guess it is awkward to swing when you jump off one foot, and nobody’ll be cranking, but learning to hit quick sets seems more difficult. Maybe I’m completely wrong.
