9/11 Memorial Typeface

The New York Times has an insightful article about the typeface used on the cornerstone of the 9/11 memorial in Manhattan. Apparently, there are people besides Dan who care about this stuff. But what I’m really curious about is how they’re dealing with the wastewater in the soil at Ground Zero. (Sadly, my subscription to Groundwater Weekly has lapsed.)

I found this article when it came out and, gasp, it’s been all over design blogs. Design Observer, a blog run by a few smart and “famous” designers wrote about it.

Gotham was created by Tobias Frere-Jones, who also made Knockout, which was commissioned by Sports Illustrated (another beauty), and Interstate, which was created to resemble highway lettering.

If I find out more about this stuff I’ll post here. Forgive me for not being about to detail why Gotham is such a beautiful typeface. We’ll see what I can do about that. If curious, read the Design Observer comments.
