Super Size Me

I just saw this movie the other night. I recommend you go rent it and give it a watch. It’s very good. As some Rolling Stone critic said, “I’m lovin’ it!”

The story: clever guy decides to go on an all-McDonalds diet for 30 days. He must eat three meals there a day, eat only what they sell, sample every item on the menu (over the 30 days), and he must super size when asked. The documentary is very well-done, winning the Sundance Film Festival award for something. The point of the documentary is to comment on the obesity epidemic in America - and more importantly - to start some conversations, like this one.

I will definitely use parts of it in class next year (we already passed the nutrition section). It’s full of interesting facts and controversial ideas. The movie seems to be working, at least somewhat - a month after the movie opened, McDonalds came out with their new line of salads and discontinued their Super Size orders. Apparently they claim the movie had nothing to do with it.

This NPR segment has information related to both the eco footprints post, and this Super Size Me one. It talks about the relationship between poverty and obesity. Very enlightening.

The poorer you are the lower the quality the food you eat too. I remember what I ate in college. I have no idea how I tried to function on that.

Not everyone needs to eat as much protein and fat as someone with my metabolism needs to, but you do need to figure out your optimal protein/fat/carb ratios to function well.

Here’s a new Nature article, “High-fat diet is bad for the brain” dealing with the effects of high fat diets. It says that mental abilities might be adversely affected. Very interesting.
