Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Mom and I saw the DVD of this one a while ago. Talk about mind games! This is another of those weird movies that really suck you in and force you to like them. This type of thing has been tried before, but most of these odd movies fail to deliver in any coherent way. This one stays with the premise and resolves itself in a remarkably plausible way, given the incredibility of the premise in the first place.
Jim Carey and Kate Winslet are both very good in the lead rolls, and are supported by extremely good actors. The directing is fantastic, and the story is weird, but compelling. It has a lot to do with how the mind works and is reminiscent of Total Recall. As usual, the writers take a really good idea too far “over the top” but I guess you have to expect that. I thought some of the characters and some of the scenes were far more caricatured than they had to be, but I suppose you have to play up to the high school crowd who spend a lot more money than I do at the movies. Nonetheless, there are opportunities for “dream scenes” that are cleverly done and easy to suspend disbelief on/in.
I recommend you see the movie. Let yourself be entertained and drawn in by it. It has some poignant things to say about relationships and our need to plunge into life without too much holding back.

Dan • 10/07/05 • 2:20 AM:This movie sucked. What was there to believe? The acting? No. The story? No. The dream-scenes (or whatever they were)? No. Elijah Wood and that other dude with spiky hair posing as memory specialists? I’m done.
