Why We Fight
Charlie Rose recently interviewed Eugene Jarecki, the director of the film Why We Fight, a documentary about militarism in the USA.
Jarecki was influenced by Eisenhower’s military-industrial complex speech and decided to make a documentary about Americans’ thoughts about why we engage in armed conflict around the world. His view is that the US is an empire, and that to maintain the empire, we must be continually prepared for war, or conducting a war. He points out the we have 800+ military bases in 130 foreign countries around the world.
The film apparently won some awards at the Sundance film festival. Maybe we should plan to see it, either together or separately. I think it may have much to say about our current state of war and saber rattling.
