Cool Clouds

This site has tons of pictures of cool looking clouds. There are so many UFO-looking clouds that they don’t seem like a big deal, even though I’ve never seen one. There are also a few that look like a child’s illustrated representation of waves, the kind with curly waves. They seem like photoshopped photos, but I’m fairly certain that most, if not all, of these photos are real. There’s one 2/3 down the page of a McDonald’s that looks like a gigantic ocean wave is about to pounce on top of it. So cool! And then there are some really beautifully colored ones that are so complex that you can stare at the image for an hour and not get bored.

The one thing I keep saying to myself: Imagine seeing these in real life! And there’s more to learn at the Cloud Appreciation Society.

In Uruguay, I saw some incredibly amazing clouds, and I even got a couple of pictures of them. I may have to find and scan one of them to show you all. It’s not a UFO or children’s-wave cloud; it’s a thunderhead. But it’s way awesome. Another cool thing was in Durazno, where we’d be up on the high part of the town looking down to downtown, seeing all these shafts of light shining through the clouds. Very impressive (though they don’t come out in my photos too well).

Truly spectacular pictures! I have never seen any clouds like these, although I do have a picture of a sunset over the Rochne memorial that’s pretty good.

By the way, on the way home from the ND-Purdue game, I saw a terrific rainbow near PA exit 277 on Rt 80. It was the complete semicircle, which you rarely see. I took some pictures, but couldn’t get it all in one shot. I went into a Denny’s restaurant to use the rest room and when I came out, the rainbow was gone.

No doubt those pictures are gnarly. I would guess that many are fake. Right? Maybe it’s just that some are lousy quality so they look fake? Dan, why are you fairly certain that they’re real? I’ve seen some insane clouds over Lake Michigan, although no UFO ones. Seeing as I’ll be in Albuquerque in a few hours, and that’s close to Roswell, perhaps I can get some unidentified cloud pictures there!

I found a cool link on the web today that pointed to old advertisements with cartoon elements. I really enjoy this old style of integrating great illustration with hand-lettering and otherwise great design craft. I found one of these ads with a great limerick on it.
