London 2012 “Branding”
What do you guys think about the new identity and branding campaign for the London 2012 Olympic Games?
I think that the person in charge is a former MTV creative director from 1984 who was frozen in time until a few months ago and upon waking up his buddy told him about Flash and video and the internet. He then got real excited and happened upon a job opening as creative director for the 2012 Games and well, click the link to see where he went with the Olympic concept.
Who knows. Maybe in 4 or 5 years this “style” will be cool and the creative decisions will be absolved. But seriously. Look at that lump of a logo. Fat chance.

Dad • 06/04/07 • 9:24 PM:I just saw this “brand” tonight and thought only two things. The first was, “Huh?” the second was, “London Bridge is Falling down.” But the latter interpretation is giving too much credit to the symbol.
David • 06/07/07 • 12:07 PM:BARF! I simply can’t believe it. When I saw it (on PTI) I thought it was a joke. I suppose I’m just a bad person because I cannot possibly understand how anyone could have let this one get past phase one of the design process, let alone make it to the top, final copy. It’s terrible on all levels, including the colors. What a huge and embarrassing mistake for the entire country. I’m glad we kicked their butts in the Revolutionary War. If the USA pulled something ridiculous like this, I’d have no other choice but to move to another country.
Patrick • 06/10/07 • 6:39 PM:I guess I understand that BIG item/event logos like this are often not very good (see other Olympics logos). But c’mon. This London one is so obviously terrible, I don’t see how it could appeal to anyone, not even the designer’s mother.
Patrick • 06/10/07 • 6:43 PM:By the way, notice any similarities between the London Olympics logo and the return of ZOOM logo?
Dad • 06/10/07 • 10:02 PM:Patrick, thanks for reminding us of how bad Olympic logos are in general. However, is there not some method in this madness? It creates a lot of buzz about how bad the logo is, and that gets people talking about the Olympics. My Barcelona Olympics T-shirt (wherever it is) is not one of my prized possessions, but who cares? The Olympics isn’t about logos anyway. It’s about French figure skating judges being bribed into voting against the Canadians. It’s about luge victories being determined by random chance. Oh yeah, and than there’s the summer games.
