What we have in common
For at least a generation now, and in some ways for all of history, we have been warning ourselves about the limits of our world and the damage caused by humans. For the most part, technology has continued to save our butts, but at a price. The price is the changes we’ve wrought upon our world, the consequences of which we cannot at the moment calculate.
I am reading a book called Capitalism 3.0 by Peter Barnes, which is a reasonably brief “guide” to reclaiming the common resources that governments, corporations, and the press of humanity have coopted from us. Note that the link is not a website from which you can purchase the book, but the book itself, free. Some may say “you get what you pay for,” but I would say it’s a very nice gesture that validates the author’s motives. He’s more interested in spreading the word than making a profite…maybe.
I still don’t know if I agree with Barnes, but I do at least agree with his basic premise: that the commons, not only our environment, but also our culture, our science, our language, our morality, and many other features of our life, needs preserving. I think he may well be part of the solution to the problem that has vexed me for much of my adult life. Take a look and let me knnow what you think.
