The Kite Runner
We finally saw The Kite Runner today, and it was great. A simple movie about honor, courage, and how to be good again.
All great movies teach us things, but these lessons are not always uplifting or particularly useful. The Kite Runner, however, is beautiful and poignant. It also provides some straightforward, take-home messages like tell the truth, stand up for your rights, and confront evil. Like good art, the movie tells us these things in ways that touch our minds and hearts emotionally, so that we’ll remember them a long time.

David • 01/31/08 • 6:49 PM:I also loved the movie (Megan too). I agree with Dad on the themes of honor, courage, and being good again. Let me add two more, loyalty and redemption (which I guess is the same as being good again). I think Hassan had a wonderful innocence and pure friendship loyalty. I thought the scenes with Hassan and Amir were the best. Maybe that’s why they chose to use them on the main poster/ad for the movie. I also liked the Rahim Khan and his role in supporting and believing in Amir. And I thought the Dad, Baba, was excellent too. Basically it’s great.
But… as with almost all book/movie combos, the book is way better. It makes it tough for the movie, in my mind, because it’s impossible for a movie to beat the book. I do feel that the master storytelling from the book was still clear in the movie. Well, I feel like I could go on and on about how much I love the book (and movie too). Let’s talk more on the phone about it.
In closing, I think the book will become a major classic, but probably not the movie.
